I Want Mike's Groove To !@#&* Rage Again
You love Mike’s Groove.  The thought has nevertheless crossed your mind in the last year why versions of Mike’s Groove since Hampton haven’t been much, if any, better than “average-great.”  (“Average-great,” because the average or typical Mike’s Groove is still great.  After all, you love the song, and Phish typically plays it great-enough, right?)   Within the last year, I have listened to...

Bringing you back (Big Cypress Content)
So, like most of you I listen to a lot of recorded phish—rock out, enjoy the music, analyze it, etc.  Some of the recordings are of shows I attended, where many aren’t. Once in a while the sonic goodness of a phish recording puts my memory into hyper-drive and I literally can remember and feel what it was like to be there, physically at the show. It’s a sensory recall thing that...

Jamie Willox, R.I.P.
Jamie Willox played an important role in many Phish festivals before passing away seven years ago today. (A memorial fund has since been established.) The following are words in his memory prepared for the second edition of The Phish Companion - first, from Michael “A” Allegretto, Director, Venue Operations for Great Northeast Productions:     Jamie had a great enthusiasm for the...

Rumor leaks are GOOD for Phish
With the lack of rumors for both summer and now fall tour - other than the MSG for NYE one - it seems like management has decided to crack down on the rumor mill after the sieve that was 2009.  For the life of me, I can’t figure out why. Phish has a traveling crowd.  If you don’t give people time to make plans, you’re going to end up with undersold venues.  Both fall and NYE...

Dec '95 Mike's Song
Remember when the open notes of Mike’s made your spine tingle in anticipation of the the majestic jamming to come?  Or at least the prospect of it?   Thanks for Livephish app and WIFI I’m currently listening to 12/1/95 http://www.livephish.com/live-music/0,402/Phish-mp3-flac-download-12-1-1995-Hersheypark-Arena-Hershey-PA.html If you haven’t listened to a 12/95 Mike’s...

The New Tunes
I made a statement in my two cents on Phish’s tour (see http://www.jambands.com/features/2010/07/13/phish-summer-tour-in-review) that “Phish is playing well, and almost all of their shiny new original songs, which debuted on this tour, appear to show at least as much promise as any Rift, Hoist or Joy tune ever did.”  (I then commented on the new tunes here and there throughout...

Phish time machine - '09/'10
Thinking about where we are now (phishwise) vs. this time last year and all of 2009 vs. 2010. If I had a time machine I think I would trade attending any four (4) of the early summer ‘09 shows for the Camden/MPP run from this year’s early summer. However, in comparing the whole year of ‘09 vs. YTD ‘10 I would not trade any of my top three ‘09 shows (7/31/09, 8/7/09,...

Grading on a curve (really a scale?)
If you haven’t checked out @TMWSIY’s Summer tour poll results you should, some very cool stuff:   http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/phish-summer-tour-survey-results/ Perhaps most interesting to me was the last question: grade the tour (FWIW, it’s still open to voting).  It took me a while to wrap my head around it, frankly, much longer than I thought it would....

ATL - Tour Closer (with report)
Get it?  Bottle rocket (with report)?  OK, that’s why I’m not paid to write… Listening to Set II of 7/4 via stream (#couchtour!) while grilling chicken and drinking harpoon 100 barrel #28 I may have been heard uttering the words “Ripcord Trey” at the end of Disease, Piper and Ghost—in typical jaded oldbie fashion.  However, this wasn’t a case of me merely...

A Telluride pipe dream
As a recession’d West Coast fan, it’s been frustrating watching those last few setlists roll in, knowing that we would have gone to the southeast run in any other year.  Not only did we miss some amazing material, but that also took away some exciting possibilities for the shows that we would be able to go to. Listening to Colorado ‘88, I had an inspiration.  The full album...

Debut Day? :(
Phish has of course debuted more songs on the 31st of a month than any other (101), particularly when Halloween is included (71 of those). But the 6th of the month is second, with 46 debuts. That’s not going to increase tonight, of course, since there’s no show - but the 17th of the month takes third (with 38 debuts), so perhaps Wantaugh, NY, will luck out next month.

Sweeter than Bojangles Tea
Perhaps I am biased because I am from North Carolina and lived there 26 years of my life, but I feel like Phish is giving the south some super love right now. I didn’t attend these shows, but sure have enjoyed couch touring it.  Yes, I am one of those people who like certain bust-outs in a show. I’m not a song chaser, but give me a show with songs I love to hear Phish cover like, Have...

Interesting!
I admit it: I’m a setlist snob. I started formulating this realization on the field in Indio, when ZZYZX turned to me and said, without the condescension implied, “I remember when I was chasing bust-outs.” And my response was succinctly “If we’re going to hear a 10 minute jam, I suppose I’d rather have the jam be off of a song I haven’t heard before...

How far we've come
One advantage to having your entire music collection on shuffle in a minimized window at work is hearing music out of context.  Without knowing what show it’s from, a song can be reevaluated apart from expectations.  While that occasionally has surprised the other way, today’s shocker just happened when the Hampton “Undermind” came on. Even before opening up the window to...
